Tensors can be defined in lots of different ways; this is just one way to think of them. It’s not uncommon for tensors to be introduced as multi-dimensional arrays which “transform nicely”, but this obscures their mathematical nature. The definition of tensors that we are using is (hopefully) accessible to those with no prior knowledge of tensors (some basic linear algebra required).
